The foregoing is a statement of the Essex Terminal Railway's commitment to the safety of its employees: The Railway's commitment to the safety of the community at large is no less rigorous.Safety at ETR

The Essex Terminal Railway will conduct its activities in the communities of Windsor, LaSalle and Amherstburg in strict accordance with the rules and regulations of Transport Canada and other governing bodies, with the safety of our neighbours, the motoring public and pedestrians foremost in mind.

SAFETY: The ETR and the Communities that it Serves

The ETR is proud of its record for safe operation in the municipalities of Windsor, LaSalle and Amherstburg.

That record is in no small measure connected to the fact that the ETR long ago decided that its trains would operate at 10 m.p.h. (16 km/hr) in the city and 15 m.p.h. (25 km/hr) in the country.

While a "go slow" policy is no guarantee of safety for the general and motoring public, it is an important contribution to it.

By way of further contribution, the ETR recognized the importance of educating the public about safety and railway operations.

Many school groups, Brownie and Beaver packs have visited the ETR for a first hand introduction to the dangers inherent in railway operations. These youngsters learn a life long respect for trains.

Commencing in 1999, the ETR will publish advertisement in the Windsor Star reminding young people, their parents and the community at large of the dangers of trespassing upon railway tracks.

The message will remind readers of the close connection between trespass and pedestrian accidents and that using railway tracks as bike or walking paths or short cuts is dangerous - and illegal.

The ETR will continue to support Operation Lifesaver, a North American effort to educate everyone about the importance of obeying crossing signals and the dangers of trespass.
